In 2017, the former Paterson research building in Withington, which housed the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, suffered a devastating fire. Over 300 scientists and research staff were displaced, and our world-leading research activities suffered a major setback.

The 10-storey building has now undergone a £150m redevelopment project to replace the Paterson Building at The Christie Hospital. Over the last 2 years, we have worked on behalf of Imtech Engineering Services and IHP to install sprinkler protection and dry risers throughout the new facility.

The dry risers were designed to comply with the requirements of BS9990 whilst the sprinkler system was designed to BS EN 12845 standards and the system was certified to the requirements of LPS 1048. This was a challenging 2-year project, installing in excess of 4,200 Sprinkler heads throughout the development in a heavily congested building with complex building services.

The system was fully 3D-modelled in Revit. The water supplies consisted of a 160m 3 tank for the sprinkler system with dual life safety sections and duplicate multistage multi-outlet (2) duty and standby electric and diesel Fire pumps rated to 2700 L/min. Given the height of the commercial development, 10 storeys, the sprinkler system pumps were configured with multistage multi outlets (2 off) across 8 installations and 17 Zones.

“This project was a real challenge with complex building services and on-site challenges post Covid pandemic. The overall design and site coordination was extremely important, and we’re hugely satisfied with the finished product, both the fire protections system and the building look great.”
